Sitting is the rest position, which we adopt after we have been standing or walking. Both body and circulation relax, and the organism reduces both its level of activity and its rate of energy consumption. This position supports mental work and promotes brain activity.

Despite this, the human body was not designed for continuous sitting. The vertebral discs, which function as shock absorbers and elastic buffers between the sections of the vertebral bodies, are only supplied with nourishment through diffusion when they are in an unstressed state. Continuous stress and desiccation can lead to irreparable damage. The back experiences less stress when the typical forward-leaning posture is adopted at the desk. Despite this, an upright position is considered the correct posture. This leads to a direct conflict of interests, with the result that any recommendation of one or the other seating posture is at best a compromise.

It is also important not to forget the importance of the blood circulation and lymphatic system, which are responsible for maintaining the organism's immune and defensive functions. A lack of movement has the effect of checking the intake of nourishment and reducing the metabolic rate. In particularly unfavourable circumstances, serious complaints and permanent damage can result.
