The Institute carries out basic research in organic and organometallic chemistry, in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis as well as in theoretical chemistry. The principal aim is to develop new methods for the selective and environmentally benign preparation of new compounds and materials.

Further Information
The registered office of the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research is in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The building constitutes a rectangular block lined with granite, where the auditorium and seminar rooms are housed, plus a primarily glass section which contains both exhibition and day rooms. The decision was made to create a new lecture hall in April 2010. The requirements included the need for a high degree of functionality and comfort, as well as the architectural concept of the building. The DSC Axis 9000 system from Haworth was chosen for the interior design of the new auditorium.
The combination of linear design and high-quality materials creates a maximum of ergonomic seat comfort. DSC Axis 9000 also offers a comprehensive selection of accessories for every requirement, for instance arm rests with fold away writing and laptop tablets.
The new auditorium at the Max Planck Institute offers room for an audience of almost 200.
